Veteran's Day

Today, Wednesday, November 11th marks our nation’s one hundred and first Veteran’s

Day. While it was originally called Armistice Day back in 1919 to mark the end of World War

One, Congress later passed a resolution making it a national holiday to be observed by all

Americans for years to come. This year we would like to honor not only those who served

decades past, but those who have fought in our most recent battles. May the Airmen fly high, the

Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen swim strong, and the Soldiers continue marching on as

we observe this day, and the many more that will follow.

Red Ribbon Week

Did you know:

Each year, an estimated 5000 people under the age of 21 die from injuries caused by underage drinking.

Teens who start drinking before age 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or abuse later in life than those who begin drinking at or after the legal age of 21.

Teen tobacco, alcohol and marijuana users are at least twice as likely as nonusers to have poor grades.  Even more alarming: Teen marijuana users are about twice as likely as non-users to drop out of high school.

Today wraps up our Red Ribbon Week; thank you to all who participated.  We know Wildcats will continue to rise about the influence.

Wednesday, October 28, 2020

Did you know that, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, that 1 out of 5 high school students deal with a mental health issue each year, but only 1 out of every 10 of these students get the help they need?  At Cy Woods, the Wildcat Mental Health Alliance wants to help end the stigma surrounding mental health.  The WMHA is a student lead club that advocates for and promotes mental health awareness on our campus.

The first meetings will take place this Wednesday after school and the guest speaker will be our very own Cy Woods principal Mr. Kinninger.  There will be an in-person meeting for the first 25 students that sign up from 3-4:10 pm.  There will also be a virtual zoom meeting from 3:25-4:25 pm also on Wednesday.  There are no club dues to be part of this club.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.  This year Red Ribbon Week begins today.

Did you know: Those that use drugs often don't see the damage they cause to those around them.  The addiction becomes more prominent and the user starts to break away from any and all relationships they once found important.

Thank you for teaming up against drugs today.

Tomorrow join us as we dress in space gear to show that we agree to ALIENate drugs.

Black History Month

Abraham Lincoln, was born February 12, 1809, he was an American statesman and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States (1861-1865) and died in office upon his assassination.  Lincoln led the nation through its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis in the American Civil War.  He preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government and modernized the U.S. economy.

Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician and former NASA astronaut.  She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.  Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987.  She orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12-20, 1992.  She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority!

In Honor of President's Day let's talk about Barack Hussein Obama.  He is an American attorney and politician who served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009-2017.  He was the first African American President of the United States.  He previously served as a U.S. Senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008 and an Illinois state senator from 1997-2004.  Obama's election in 2008 signified that our country was moving in the right direction -- a country who once had African slaves had finally elected an African American to be President.

212 Week

Happy Valentine's Day, Wildcat.  Today, we are raising awareness for Teen Dating Violence, which is a very real issue in our society.  One in three teens in the US will experience physical, sexual or emotional abuse before they become adults.  43% of college women report experiencing violent and abusive dating behavior.  Wildcats, take a stand against this issue by understanding that love is RESPECT.  Take care of yourself, your classmates and those you love by being respectful.  Let's end Teen Dating Violence together!

Wildcats, thank you for participating in "Power of 212" Week!  Through priorities, taking ownership, having willingness, ethics and respect, we can use the power of 212 and always go the extra degree.

Did you know that 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 receive unintentional injuries while under the influence of alcohol?  Drinking too much can damage the ends of neurons in your brain called dendrites making it difficult for them to relay messages to one another.  1 in 4 college students experience negative academic consequences from drinking.  Keep your grades up and think before you drink!
