No Place For Hate Fact

On October 31, 1950, 21-year-old Earl Lloyd became the first African American to play in an NBA game when he took the court in the season opener for the Washington Capitols, which are now the Sacramento Kings.  Lloyd grew up in Jim Crow Virginia and went to West Virginia State, where he was the star of the school's championship basketball team.

Dual Credit

Wildcats, if you wish to take a Dual Credit course next school year, registration is open now.  Taking Dual Credit courses is a great way to save time and money when thinking about your college plans.

If you are new to Dual Credit, you will need to apply to Lone Star College and receive a Lone Star ID Number.  You will need to check with your counselor to see if you have qualifying test scores.  The registration form is available online at the Cypress Woods College and Career site, or in the counseling office.  Forms are due no later than April 30.  See Mrs. England or Ms. Pickett in the counseling office if you need assistance.

Black History Month

Little Known Black History Fact:

A big piece of Cy-Fair History is the Carverdale School, a segregated school from 1925-1970.  In 1938, the school, then call Fairbanks Colored School, had its first official graduating class, which was up to the 6th grade.  In 1955, the school grew to accommodate grades 1 through 12 and was renamed Carverdale School after the community.  It was located where Highway 290 meets Beltway 8.  The Carverdale School shut down in 1970 after the district was ordered by the federal government to desegregate in 1967.

Black History Month

Little Known Black History Fact:

Interracial marriage was banned in the United States in 1664 and not overturned until 1967.  In the Loving vs. Virginia supreme court case.  The supreme court ruled that prohibiting interracial marriage on state and local levels was unconstitutional; this meant that marriages between the races were legal in the country for the first time since 1664.  In 2000, Alabama was the last state to officially legalize interracial marriage.

Black History Month

Little Known Black History Fact:

It was March 2, 1955, when the fifteen-year-old schoolgirl, named Claudette Colvin, refused to move to the back of the bus, nine months before Rosa Parks' stand that launched the Montgomery bus boycott.  Claudette Colvin's stand didn't stop there.  She was arrested and thrown in jail.  She was one of four women who challenged the segregation law in court.  That court case successfully overturned bus segregation laws in Alabama.

Boy's Golf

Coach Neill would like to congratulate our boys golf team for winning the Hearthstone Invitational yesterday with a team total of 307.  212 Gentleman!!

Black History Month

Every February, people in the United States celebrate the achievements and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month.  Stop by the Library to see our displays honoring these special individuals.  Celebrate our favorite African American authors & illustrators by checking out one of their books.  Get to the heart of Black History Month!

JV Boy's Soccer

The defense locked the ponies down while goals rained in.  It was a great win and a terrific team effort.

The boys play at home Wednesday night so come out and support your Wildcats!

No Place for Hate

Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician and former NASA astronaut.  She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.  Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987.  She orbited for nearly eight days on September 12-20, 1992.  She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority!

Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard and Bobby Marshall were the first two African American players in the NFL in 1920.  Fritz Pollard became the first African American head coach in the National Football League.  Pollard went to Brown University, majoring in chemistry.  He was the first black football player at Brown University.  He became the first black running back to be named to Walter Camp's All-America team.

No Place For Hate

Black History Month was created in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson announced the second week of February to be "Black History Week".  This week was chosen because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass on February 14, both of which dates, black communities had celebrated together since the late 19th century.  It became Black History Month in February 1976.  The primary emphasis was placed on encouraging the teaching of the history of African Americans in the nation's public schools.

At a time when many schools barred their doors to African Americans, HBCUs or Historically Black Colleges and Universities offered the best and of the only opportunity for a higher education.  HBCUs educated African Americans almost exclusively from 1865 to the 1950s, prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1965.  Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University, Grambling State and Morehouse are some examples of HBCUs.

Last night your Lady Wildcat varsity soccer team leapt passed the Lobos in a 1-0 victory.  The lone goal came from a strong header put away by the Junior Captain.  These Wildcats would like to personally thank all the teachers who came out last night for our teacher appreciation game.  Thanks again for all you are doing during these difficult times - we see you and appreciate it all!

These Cats are back in action against district foe Cy Ranch on Friday at home - we would love for our Wildcat peers to come help cheer us on to a victory!  JV begins at 5:30 and Varsity at 7:30 - hope to see you there!
