Hispanic Heritage Month

Eva Peron was born in Argentina in 1919 as the illegitimate daughter of a rancher who died when she was just a child. History remembers her as EVITA the First Lady of Argentina, wife of the caudillo and according to many Argentines, the spirit of their country.

Maria Eva Duarte de Peron was an actress, an activist and a politician before her death in 1952 at the age of 33 from cancer. She knew from her youngest years that she would be a film and music star. She was bold and strong in an age and in a country where women were more often expected to be seen than to be heard. She was a powerful force in the government of her husband, Juan Peron, and she won the hearts of millions of people in Argentina and around the world.

Stories tell of Evita knocking on every door in Buenos Aires to rouse hundred of thousands of people to protest in the streets for the release of her husband who had been arrested by rivals. The musical EVITA shows her as a legendary hero for the people of Argentina and Madonna portrayed her in the movie. People everywhere know the words to "Don't Cry For me Argentina".

Today, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the beloved former first lady of Argentina, EVITA, Eva Peron.

Sharing stories important to us means sharing a part of ourselves. Books reach across boundaries and build connections between readers. Censorship, on the other hand, divides us and creates barriers. Stop by the Library this week to see our display and have conversations about the books that some have tried to censor.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Gauchos are the nomadic horsemen who roamed the Argentine and Uruguayan pampas, or grasslands, in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Similar to North American cowboys, gauchos are celebrated in legends and heroic folklore.

Gauchos managed herds of wild horses and cattle on the South American plains and lived from what they supplied. Their traditional equipment included the chiripa, a wide belt worn around the waist, bombachas, pleated pants that bunched at the ankles and most famous of all, the boleadora, or bola, a device made of small, heavy iron balls attached together by leather strips that were used to trip up and immobilize cattle, similar to a cowboy's rope lasso.

The gaucho eventually lost his freedom of wandering the wild pampas and was forced to work on the massive estancias, or ranches, that cover the modern grasslands. Despite this, they are a continual source for advertisements, legends, books and movies, just like his counterpart in North America.

Today, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the gauchos!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Simon Bolivar is South America's greatest hero. He led the successful independence movements in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, which is named in his honor.

Simon Jose Antonio de la Santisima Trinidad Bolivar y Ponte Palacios y Blanco was born into a very wealthy family in Caracas, Venezuela in 1783, the year the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. Like most rich young men from South America, he was sent to Europe to study art, government, philosophy and war. Despite learning at the great universities of Europe, it was his childhood teacher, Don Simon Rodriguez, whose lessons on liberty, enlightenment and freedom inspired him to launch the wars of independence across Latin America.

El Libertador, as Bolivar was known throughout Latin America, dreamt of a unified, powerful South American nation that could compete with the great powers of the 1800's - Great Britain, France and the United States. He served as president of Gran Colombia, a massive nation covering much of northern South America and was the target of multiple assassination attempts. Even though his hopes of a great empire were not realized, his legacy lives on throughout the entire continent.

Today, during Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize Simon Bolivar, El Libertador!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Frida Kahlo is one of, if not the most popular and recognizable artists in all of Latin America. She's especially famous in her home country of Mexico where her image can be seen on everything from billboards advertising nail polish, to Barbie dolls. Her work is an integral part of la cultura mexicana.

Magdalena Carmen Fida Kahlo y Calderon was born in 1907 and grew up during the Mexican Revolution. The Revolution and her mother's indigenous culture became the focus of her often controversial artwork and politics.

Today, Frida Kahlo is seen as an inspiration for many groups across Mexico and Latin America. She was an outspoken champion for authentic Mexican culture and arts. She is admired by those who respect the ancient traditions of Hispanic culture. Feminists applaud her because of her fearless representations of women in art. She is prominent in the American Chicano movement, El Movimiento, which promotes equality and respect for Hispanics across the country.

Today during Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize Frida Kahlo.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Major League Baseball recognized the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, charity and community outreach. That honor is known as the Roberto Clemente Award.

Roberto Clemente was born in Puerto Rico in 1934. By 1955 he was playing professional baseball in the United States and in 1966 he was recognized as the National League's MVP.

Clemente was the first Latin player to start in and win a World Series. He was the first Latin player to collect 3000 hits. He was the first Latin player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

All of these great accomplishments are not what Roberto Clemente is famous for, however. What Clemente did best was help others. Astros legend Craig Biggio, the 2007 recipient of the Clemente Award, said "as great of a player as he was, he was a bigger man off the field in his generosity and his time and giving back to the community."

Tragically, Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash on New Year's Eve, 1972 while delivering aid to earthquake survivors in Nicaragua.

Today as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, we remember Roberto Clemente.

Dieciseis de Septiembre

Have you ever wondered why Texans celebrate Dieciseis de Septiembre every year? Today is a huge fiesta in Mexico and for Mexicans around the world, that celebrates Mexico's independence from Spain 200 years ago!

On Sept. 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, rang the church bells and took a stand against Spain with the "grito de Dolores," a cry for revolution, from Dolores, in the state of Guanajuato in Mexico.

That day, Hidalgo kick started a war between Spain and Mexico which eventually led to Mexico's independence in 1821. All across Mexico, Father Hidalgo is beloved as the "Father of Mexico" and Diez y seies de Septiembre is the Mexican equivalent of July the 4th. Even the President of Mexico participates by ringing that same bell - now over 200 years old - live on TV the night before the big celebration.

Viva la Independencia Nacional

National Hispanic Month

Every year from September 15 to October 15, Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by appreciating the community's history, heritage and contributions of the ancestors of American citizens who came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and South and Central America.

Hispanic Heritage Month originally started with one week of commemoration when it was first introduced by Congressman George E. Brown in June 1968. With the civil rights movement, the need to recognize the contributions of the Latin community gained traction in the 1960s.

September 15 is set as the starting date for the month as it is important for many reasons. It is the independence anniversary for Latin American countries El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. From here onwards, the independence days of Mexico and Chile fall on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Dia de la Raza or Columbus Day also falls within this month, on October 12.

Hispanic Americans have been integral to the prosperity of the U.S. Their contributions to the nation are immeasurable and they embody the best of American values. The Hispanic-American community has left an indelible mark on the U.S. culture and economy.
