National Superhero Day

Yesterday was National Superhero Day.  Wildcats celebrated by tweeting, messaging or writing to their hero!  Make sure to always tell your hero that you're proud of how brave and strong he or she is!  As Iron Man once said, "Heroes are made with the path they choose, not with the powers they are graced with."  Thank your hero for choosing a path that includes you!

No Place for Hate

Wildcats, be careful with your words.  Once they are said, they can only be forgiven but never forgotten!  Let's end Hate speech!

Wildcats, April is Sexual assault Awareness month.  1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males will experience some form of sexual assault.  Perhaps the most important thing that victims need to understand, is that you are not alone.  We are here to support you.  Your Wildcat family has your back.

Wildcats, we must send a message that there is no shame in being a victim of sexual assault, the shame and disgrace is on the aggressor!  Victims are not what happens to them, but what they choose to become!

Wildcats don't let Wildcats blame victims.  It was not about what they were wearing, drinking or doing.  No one deserves to be sexually assaulted.  If you are aware of a situation of sexual assault, please tell someone who can help.  Feel free to use the tipline!

No Place for Hate

You may not know the name Satoshi Tajiri, but we're willing to bet you would recognize his most famous creation, Pokemon.  Satoshi has stated that he is on the high-functioning end of the Autism Spectrum.  He has confirmed on more than one occasion that he has Asperger's Syndrome, but as a general rule Tajiri chooses not to talk about his diagnosis in public.  Rather, he prefers that his many accomplishments speak for themselves.  Here is one of his quotes, "We do have a lot in common.  The same earth, the same air, the same sky.  Maybe if we started looking at what's the same, instead of looking at what's different, well, who knows?" - Meowth

No Place for Hate

April is Autism Awareness Month.  There is no one type of Autism but many.  Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today.

The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged.  Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.  There are numerous successful individuals with some form of Autism.

No Place for Hate

- We wanted to take this last week of Women's history month to highlight some Asian-American trailblazers.  Patsy Mink, a third generation Japanese-American, became the first Asian-American woman (and the first woman from an ethnic minority group) to be elected to the United States Congress in 1964.

In her four decades there, she worked to amplify the voices and rights of immigrants, women and aggressively championed Title IX, the legislation that brought academic and athletic equity to American educational institutions.

 - Chien-Shiung Wu who is known as the "First Lady of Physics" is a Chinese-born, American trained physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project which helped the United States develop the atomic bomb during World War II.  In 1975, she became the first female president of the American Physical Society.  Wu once remarked, "There is only one thing worse than coming home from the lab to a sink full of dirty dishes and that is not going to the lab at all."

- Amy Tan is both a beloved writer and trailblazer in the literary world.  Her bestselling 1989 novel The Joy Luck Club offered a portrait of Asian-American family life that was both specific to the community and universally felt.

- Tammy Duckworth, a U.S. senator currently representing the state of Illinois, has achieved an impressive number of firsts: She was the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first woman with a disability to be elected to Congress, the first female double amputee in the Senate.  She lost both legs while serving as a helicopter pilot in the Iraq War.  She is also the first member of Congress born in Thailand.

No Place for Hate

 - Little known black history fact about who has the most NBA championship rings.  That player is Bill Russel and he has won more rings than Kobe Bryant and Lebron James combined.  Bill Russel has earned 11 rings with the Boston Celtics. Two of his rings were earned as a player-coach.

- Mia Hamm is an American retired professional soccer player, two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion.  Hailed as a soccer icon, she played as a forward for the United States women's national soccer team from 1987 to 2004.  She currently ranks third in the history of the U.S. National team for international caps with 276 and first for career assists with 144.

- Rania Al-Abdullah is the queen consort of Jordan.  She is a progressive female voice in the Arab world, who is also a powerful advocate for reform in education and public health in Jordan.  She once said, "If you educate a woman, you educate a family.  If you educate a girl, you educate the future."

Theater

This month is theatre in our schools month.  During these unprecedented times, the arts have played an important role in supporting the social and educational wellbeing of students, whether through online learning or in person.  The arts, which include dance, theatre, music and visual arts promotes team building and self reflection that aids in creativity, critical thinking and communication.  This month make sure to support your arts programs.

No Place for Hate

Since 1995, Presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as "Women's History Month".  These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

We will spend time during the announcements, highlighting some of the amazing accomplishments and contributions women have made all over the world.

 - The 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote, and was signed into law on August 26, 1920.  At the time, a number of other laws prohibited Native American women, Black women, Asian American women and Latin women from voting.  It wasn't until 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, that discriminatory tactics such as literacy tests were outlawed and all women could vote. So exercise your right and vote!

 - The 2021 theme for Women's Month is "Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silenced."  The focus is on women's political involvement and leadership.  Women have played a major role in helping America honor what is written in the Constitution.

 - After winning the 2020 president election with Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris has made history as the first woman, first Black woman and first Asian American vice president in history.  That is 232 years after George Washington took the oath of office in 1789.

 - Today is International Women's Day and it is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.  The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.  This year's theme is Choose to Challenge!

Varsity Softball

Varsity softball won all three games on March 4 beating Magnolia West, Klein Cain and Cy Springs.

They won both games on Saturday beating Bridgeland 15-8 and Tomball Memorial 5-0.

That puts their record at 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in district.  They will next take on Langham Creek Tuesday at home.

Hockey

Congratulations to the Varsity Hockey team for their 4-1 victory over the Woodlands on Friday.

Good luck to the team tonight as they take on Tomball.  Get out there and hurt somebody!

Computer Science

On Saturday, March 6th, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) hosted a virtual Computer Science programming contest.

There were over 250 teams from across the planet.

The results are as follows for Woods:

World Champions - 1st place

212 to the Cy Woods Computer Science team

Lady Wildcat Soccer

Your Lady Wildcat JV Soccer team beat Langham and Lakes with a combined total of 5-0.  Come support your Wildcats Wednesday as they take on those pesky ponies from down the street.

In the past few days your Lady Wildcat varsity team knocked off two district opponents.  On Friday they finished the Lobos 2-1.  Monday night, in very wet and windy conditions these Cats pulled off a win over a physical Lakes squad. These Cats take on district rival Cy Ranch tonight.

Good luck soccer.

No Place for Hate

Today little known black history fact is about Cullen Jones.  Cullen Jones is the first African American male swimmer to hold a world record in swimming.  At the 2008 United States Olympic Trials, Cullen set the record for the 50-meter freestyle and he didn't stop there.  He set the 50-meter freestyle American record in 2009 at the U.S. National Championships.

His record breaking career wasn't limited to solo efforts - Cullen was part of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams.  In 2008, he teamed up with the likes of Michael Phelps, Jason Lezak and Garret Weber-Gale and together they got the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay, which also came with the world record time.

Black History Month

Little Known Black History Fact:

A big piece of Cy-Fair History is the Carverdale School, a segregated school from 1925-1970.  In 1938, the school, then call Fairbanks Colored School, had its first official graduating class, which was up to the 6th grade.  In 1955, the school grew to accommodate grades 1 through 12 and was renamed Carverdale School after the community.  It was located where Highway 290 meets Beltway 8.  The Carverdale School shut down in 1970 after the district was ordered by the federal government to desegregate in 1967.

Black History Month

Little Known Black History Fact:

Interracial marriage was banned in the United States in 1664 and not overturned until 1967.  In the Loving vs. Virginia supreme court case.  The supreme court ruled that prohibiting interracial marriage on state and local levels was unconstitutional; this meant that marriages between the races were legal in the country for the first time since 1664.  In 2000, Alabama was the last state to officially legalize interracial marriage.

Black History Month

Little Known Black History Fact:

It was March 2, 1955, when the fifteen-year-old schoolgirl, named Claudette Colvin, refused to move to the back of the bus, nine months before Rosa Parks' stand that launched the Montgomery bus boycott.  Claudette Colvin's stand didn't stop there.  She was arrested and thrown in jail.  She was one of four women who challenged the segregation law in court.  That court case successfully overturned bus segregation laws in Alabama.

Boy's Golf

Coach Neill would like to congratulate our boys golf team for winning the Hearthstone Invitational yesterday with a team total of 307.  212 Gentleman!!

Black History Month

Every February, people in the United States celebrate the achievements and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month.  Stop by the Library to see our displays honoring these special individuals.  Celebrate our favorite African American authors & illustrators by checking out one of their books.  Get to the heart of Black History Month!

JV Boy's Soccer

No Place For Hate

Black History Month was created in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson announced the second week of February to be "Black History Week".  This week was chosen because it coincided with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and of Frederick Douglass on February 14, both of which dates, black communities had celebrated together since the late 19th century.  It became Black History Month in February 1976.  The primary emphasis was placed on encouraging the teaching of the history of African Americans in the nation's public schools.

At a time when many schools barred their doors to African Americans, HBCUs or Historically Black Colleges and Universities offered the best and of the only opportunity for a higher education.  HBCUs educated African Americans almost exclusively from 1865 to the 1950s, prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1965.  Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University, Grambling State and Morehouse are some examples of HBCUs.
