No Place for Hate

- We wanted to take this last week of Women's history month to highlight some Asian-American trailblazers.  Patsy Mink, a third generation Japanese-American, became the first Asian-American woman (and the first woman from an ethnic minority group) to be elected to the United States Congress in 1964.

In her four decades there, she worked to amplify the voices and rights of immigrants, women and aggressively championed Title IX, the legislation that brought academic and athletic equity to American educational institutions.

 - Chien-Shiung Wu who is known as the "First Lady of Physics" is a Chinese-born, American trained physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project which helped the United States develop the atomic bomb during World War II.  In 1975, she became the first female president of the American Physical Society.  Wu once remarked, "There is only one thing worse than coming home from the lab to a sink full of dirty dishes and that is not going to the lab at all."

- Amy Tan is both a beloved writer and trailblazer in the literary world.  Her bestselling 1989 novel The Joy Luck Club offered a portrait of Asian-American family life that was both specific to the community and universally felt.

- Tammy Duckworth, a U.S. senator currently representing the state of Illinois, has achieved an impressive number of firsts: She was the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first woman with a disability to be elected to Congress, the first female double amputee in the Senate.  She lost both legs while serving as a helicopter pilot in the Iraq War.  She is also the first member of Congress born in Thailand.

No Place for Hate

 - Little known black history fact about who has the most NBA championship rings.  That player is Bill Russel and he has won more rings than Kobe Bryant and Lebron James combined.  Bill Russel has earned 11 rings with the Boston Celtics. Two of his rings were earned as a player-coach.

- Mia Hamm is an American retired professional soccer player, two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion.  Hailed as a soccer icon, she played as a forward for the United States women's national soccer team from 1987 to 2004.  She currently ranks third in the history of the U.S. National team for international caps with 276 and first for career assists with 144.

- Rania Al-Abdullah is the queen consort of Jordan.  She is a progressive female voice in the Arab world, who is also a powerful advocate for reform in education and public health in Jordan.  She once said, "If you educate a woman, you educate a family.  If you educate a girl, you educate the future."

Theater

This month is theatre in our schools month.  During these unprecedented times, the arts have played an important role in supporting the social and educational wellbeing of students, whether through online learning or in person.  The arts, which include dance, theatre, music and visual arts promotes team building and self reflection that aids in creativity, critical thinking and communication.  This month make sure to support your arts programs.

No Place for Hate

Since 1995, Presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as "Women's History Month".  These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

We will spend time during the announcements, highlighting some of the amazing accomplishments and contributions women have made all over the world.

 - The 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote, and was signed into law on August 26, 1920.  At the time, a number of other laws prohibited Native American women, Black women, Asian American women and Latin women from voting.  It wasn't until 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, that discriminatory tactics such as literacy tests were outlawed and all women could vote. So exercise your right and vote!

 - The 2021 theme for Women's Month is "Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silenced."  The focus is on women's political involvement and leadership.  Women have played a major role in helping America honor what is written in the Constitution.

 - After winning the 2020 president election with Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris has made history as the first woman, first Black woman and first Asian American vice president in history.  That is 232 years after George Washington took the oath of office in 1789.

 - Today is International Women's Day and it is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.  The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.  This year's theme is Choose to Challenge!

Varsity Softball

Varsity softball won all three games on March 4 beating Magnolia West, Klein Cain and Cy Springs.

They won both games on Saturday beating Bridgeland 15-8 and Tomball Memorial 5-0.

That puts their record at 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in district.  They will next take on Langham Creek Tuesday at home.

Hockey

Congratulations to the Varsity Hockey team for their 4-1 victory over the Woodlands on Friday.

Good luck to the team tonight as they take on Tomball.  Get out there and hurt somebody!

No Place for Hate

Today little known black history fact is about Cullen Jones.  Cullen Jones is the first African American male swimmer to hold a world record in swimming.  At the 2008 United States Olympic Trials, Cullen set the record for the 50-meter freestyle and he didn't stop there.  He set the 50-meter freestyle American record in 2009 at the U.S. National Championships.

His record breaking career wasn't limited to solo efforts - Cullen was part of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams.  In 2008, he teamed up with the likes of Michael Phelps, Jason Lezak and Garret Weber-Gale and together they got the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay, which also came with the world record time.
