Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, the United States observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

This year, the theme for Hispanic Heritage Month was "Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope." Over the past month we have recognized artists, scientists, popular icons and leaders. We have highlighted people and practices from all over the Hispanic world but have only scratched the surface of their contributions.

Today, as we conclude our observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, we reflect upon these and the many other ways that this vibrant, exciting and colorful culture makes life in the USA richer, more complex and more satisfying.

Hispanic Heritage Month

The largest urban area in North America isn't NYC or LA - it is Mexico City. With a population of over 21 million people in the greater Mexico City area, it is also the largest Spanish-speaking city in the entire world.

The Aztecs were led to the location by a sign from their god, Huitzilopochtli, who pointed to the site by showing them a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear devouring a rattlesnake. The city was originally built on an island of Lake Texcoco by the Aztecs in 1325 as Tenochtitlan, which was almost completely destroyed by the Spanish in 1521. The lake is still there, too - which is why parts of the city have sunk more than 30 feet in the last 100 years.

When Hernan Cortes invaded Mexico in 1521 he marched toward what was described as a "golden city" - Tenochtitlan. Since then, Mexico City has grown far beyond the island that it once occupied. It now covers the entire Valley of Mexico and is one of the most productive and culturally important cities in the world. You can still see the remnants of the old Aztec city in some surviving temples and in the waterways of Xochimilco, called chinampas.

Hispanic Heritage Month

When it comes to controversy, few federal holidays can compare with October 12th. Depending on what part of the world you're in or even which neighborhood in a big city, October 12th can go by one of over a dozen different names.

Originally celebrated in New York City in 1792, Columbus Day became a celebration of Italian culture and its contributions to life in the United States. By 1892, after an incident of anti-Italian immigrant violence, President Benjamin Harrison declared the 12th to be a one-time national celebration that included school presentations and publications along patriotic, American themes. Francis Bellamy also published his most famous work for this celebration, the Pledge of Allegiance.

In Mexico and across Latin America, the 12th is known as Dia de la Raza, Dia de la Resistencia Indigena, El dia de la Raza y de la Hispanidad and Dia de las Americas among others. It is a chance for people to reflect upon and celebrate the Hispanic influence on the development of the two American continents and to appreciate the indigenous people whose traditions, food, religions and languages blended with the Europeans to make Hispanic culture what it is.

In recent years, October 12th has been marked by protests and the demands for the removal of statues and monuments that many in the Latino community view as representing oppressors and tyrants. Meanwhile, celebrations of Italian-American heritage continue in cities like New York and San Francisco. This year, President Joe Biden has proclaimed the holiday Indigenous Peoples' Day to celebrate the "invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples" and "recognize their inherent sovereignty".

Computer Science

On Saturday the 16th, the Cypress Woods Computer Science team travelled to 7 Lakes for the 13th annual 7 Lakes CS contest.

Woods placed 1st and 4th in the Advanced Division and 4th and 6th in the Novice Division.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Selena Quintanilla Gomez, better known simply as Selena, was adored by millions of fans for her music, style and personality. She blended traditional Tejano music with upbeat Mexican cumbia in both Spanish and English. Her albums, which sold over 30 million copies worldwide, were some of the first for a female Hispanic artist to reach the Billboard charts in Mexico and the United States.

The Queen of Tejano music was only 23 years old when she was murdered in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Over 60,000 fans attended her public funeral in Corpus Christi. Across South Texas, she is revered as a diva, a martyr and even a saint. She was so popular that after her death in 1995 Governor George W. Bush declared that in Texas, April 16, her birthday, would be remembered as Selena Day. "Dreaming of You" her record released just after her death, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, something no other Latin recording artist had done and led Billboard magazine to name her the greatest female Latin artist of all time. The movie made about her life launched the career of a then-unknown actress, Jennifer Lopez.

Now, over 26 years after her death, Selena is still one of the most popular musicians on Spanish-language radio and her songs are covered by Tejano bands.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, today we remember the Queen of Tejano music, Selena.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sophia Sotomayor was born in the Bronx on June 25, 1954. Her parents were both Puerto Rican and she even refers to herself as a "Nuyorican". After deciding that she wanted to be a lawyer at the age of 10 while watching a TV show, she graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School, Princeton and Yale Law.

Sonia Sotomayor was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009 by President Obama. The first Hispanic justice and only the 3rd woman appointed to the high court, she had risen steadily through the ranks of the courts until she was appointed to a federal judgeship by President Bush in 1991. She rose to fame for her work in saving Major League Baseball from itself after the strike in 1995. While Sotomayor never demanded media attention and kept a low profile in her courtroom, lawyers who stood before her remember her well. Sotomayor is known on the court for her trust in the judicial process and her cutthroat attitude toward ill-prepared attorneys. She is also known for her kindness toward jurors and the attorneys who work hard to advocate for their clients.

If I grabbed a handful

of words

I had never heard and

Sprinkled them over a paragraph

So I could write

A magnificent story

In 2015, Juan Felipe Herrera was named the first chicano poet of the United States, an honorary position created by Congress to raise awareness of the reading and writing of poetry in our country. His writings include books for children, books of poetry and books on social issues surrounding hispanic life and culture. His book, Imagine, asks children to imagine what they can be when they grow up.

If I started to write

A poem

On a skinny paper pad after school

As i walked on the wide sidewalk

And then finished it

When

I got home

Juan Felipe Herrera was born to California migrant farmworkers in 1948. In college at UCLA he was active in the Chicano civil rights movement and has been a prominent part of the Chicano literary movement since the 1960's. Hispanic Heritage Month

Cesar Chavez is known across the US as an organizer, a community builder and a champion for the rights of laborers. Born in 1927 in Arizona, he, along with Dolores Huerta, led the United Farm Workers in the 1960s and fought for the rights of farm workers.

The famous UFW strike against the grape-growers was one of the first successful efforts among these workers to gain rights and benefits. Inspired by Mohandas Gandhi and his fight for equality and fairness in India, Cesar's tactics were non-violent and attracted the attention of celebrities and the media. His famous "NO UVAS", "no grapes", stickers were seen on car bumpers around the country.

Chavez is considered a "folk-saint" in many Mexican-American communities. His birthday is a state holiday in some parts of the country and his legacy lives on through the programs that he began and led until his death in 1993.

Today in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize Cesar Chavez.

Hispanic Heritage Month

There is no place in the world like the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Mexico City.

This plaza contains buildings from all of the people who have lived in Mexico - Aztec, Spanish and contemporary Mexican. The oldest are the 700-year-old ruins of Tlatelolco, a city-state that was built hundreds of years before Columbus sailed into the Americas. Next to that stands the Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco, an engineering school built by Franciscan monks in the 1500's and the Templo de Santiago, a Catholic church built with some of the stones from the ancient pyramids. Finally, el Centro Cultual Universitario of the National University of Mexico, built in 1964, completes the plaza.

The plaza has seen Mexico City grow from chinampas to sky-scrapers and everything in between. When the Aztecs ruled Mexico, the site was a roaring, bustling market filled with goods from across the Americas. In 1521, the Spaniards under Cortes completed their conquest of Mexico, winning a brutal, bloody battle in the shadow of those temples. In 1968 during a student protest, Mexican military soldiers and helicopters with machine guns slaughtered hundreds of people during a government crackdown. Now, the Plaza de las Culturas is a beautiful attraction in Mexico City that attracts thousands of tourists who eat churros and tacos al pastor, pose for Instagram and enjoy the wide, open space in the middle of a city of almost 9 million people.

Hispanic Heritage Month

All across Latin America, few things are as exciting to young girls as their Quinceanera.

The quince is a traditional coming-of-age celebration for girls on their 15th birthday. It is a social and religious event that emphasizes the importance of family, faith, friends and society in everyone's life. The history of this event goes back to the days of the Aztecs and it is believed to be a combination of ancient and Spanish traditions.

The festivities usually begin with a mass at church for the Quinceanera, her family and her padrinos, of godparents. After that is when the fun begins. A party with food, dancing and music comes next. The quince will often have a choreographed dance, like a waltz, that is the highlight of the party. Some of these dances, taught to the quince's damas ("maids of honour") and chambelanes ("chamberlains"), involve lights, costumes and special music. Various other traditions such as gifting a doll to her younger sister, wearing heels and a fancy cake are all part of ways to celebrate the quinceanera. If you get invited to a quinceanera, expect to eat well, dance a lot and have a great time at this once-in-a-lifetime event for young ladies.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Eva Peron was born in Argentina in 1919 as the illegitimate daughter of a rancher who died when she was just a child. History remembers her as EVITA the First Lady of Argentina, wife of the caudillo and according to many Argentines, the spirit of their country.

Maria Eva Duarte de Peron was an actress, an activist and a politician before her death in 1952 at the age of 33 from cancer. She knew from her youngest years that she would be a film and music star. She was bold and strong in an age and in a country where women were more often expected to be seen than to be heard. She was a powerful force in the government of her husband, Juan Peron, and she won the hearts of millions of people in Argentina and around the world.

Stories tell of Evita knocking on every door in Buenos Aires to rouse hundred of thousands of people to protest in the streets for the release of her husband who had been arrested by rivals. The musical EVITA shows her as a legendary hero for the people of Argentina and Madonna portrayed her in the movie. People everywhere know the words to "Don't Cry For me Argentina".

Today, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the beloved former first lady of Argentina, EVITA, Eva Peron.

Gauchos are the nomadic horsemen who roamed the Argentine and Uruguayan pampas, or grasslands, in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Similar to North American cowboys, gauchos are celebrated in legends and heroic folklore.

Gauchos managed herds of wild horses and cattle on the South American plains and lived from what they supplied. Their traditional equipment included the chiripa, a wide belt worn around the waist, bombachas, pleated pants that bunched at the ankles and most famous of all, the boleadora, or bola, a device made of small, heavy iron balls attached together by leather strips that were used to trip up and immobilize cattle, similar to a cowboy's rope lasso.

The gaucho eventually lost his freedom of wandering the wild pampas and was forced to work on the massive estancias, or ranches, that cover the modern grasslands. Despite this, they are a continual source for advertisements, legends, books and movies, just like his counterpart in North America.

Today, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the gauchos!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Simon Bolivar is South America's greatest hero. He led the successful independence movements in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, which is named in his honor.

Simon Jose Antonio de la Santisima Trinidad Bolivar y Ponte Palacios y Blanco was born into a very wealthy family in Caracas, Venezuela in 1783, the year the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. Like most rich young men from South America, he was sent to Europe to study art, government, philosophy and war. Despite learning at the great universities of Europe, it was his childhood teacher, Don Simon Rodriguez, whose lessons on liberty, enlightenment and freedom inspired him to launch the wars of independence across Latin America.

El Libertador, as Bolivar was known throughout Latin America, dreamt of a unified, powerful South American nation that could compete with the great powers of the 1800's - Great Britain, France and the United States. He served as president of Gran Colombia, a massive nation covering much of northern South America and was the target of multiple assassination attempts. Even though his hopes of a great empire were not realized, his legacy lives on throughout the entire continent.

Today, during Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize Simon Bolivar, El Libertador!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Frida Kahlo is one of, if not the most popular and recognizable artists in all of Latin America. She's especially famous in her home country of Mexico where her image can be seen on everything from billboards advertising nail polish, to Barbie dolls. Her work is an integral part of la cultura mexicana.

Magdalena Carmen Fida Kahlo y Calderon was born in 1907 and grew up during the Mexican Revolution. The Revolution and her mother's indigenous culture became the focus of her often controversial artwork and politics.

Today, Frida Kahlo is seen as an inspiration for many groups across Mexico and Latin America. She was an outspoken champion for authentic Mexican culture and arts. She is admired by those who respect the ancient traditions of Hispanic culture. Feminists applaud her because of her fearless representations of women in art. She is prominent in the American Chicano movement, El Movimiento, which promotes equality and respect for Hispanics across the country.

Today during Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize Frida Kahlo.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Major League Baseball recognized the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, charity and community outreach. That honor is known as the Roberto Clemente Award.

Roberto Clemente was born in Puerto Rico in 1934. By 1955 he was playing professional baseball in the United States and in 1966 he was recognized as the National League's MVP.

Clemente was the first Latin player to start in and win a World Series. He was the first Latin player to collect 3000 hits. He was the first Latin player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

All of these great accomplishments are not what Roberto Clemente is famous for, however. What Clemente did best was help others. Astros legend Craig Biggio, the 2007 recipient of the Clemente Award, said "as great of a player as he was, he was a bigger man off the field in his generosity and his time and giving back to the community."

Tragically, Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash on New Year's Eve, 1972 while delivering aid to earthquake survivors in Nicaragua.

Today as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, we remember Roberto Clemente.

Dieciseis de Septiembre

Have you ever wondered why Texans celebrate Dieciseis de Septiembre every year? Today is a huge fiesta in Mexico and for Mexicans around the world, that celebrates Mexico's independence from Spain 200 years ago!

On Sept. 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, rang the church bells and took a stand against Spain with the "grito de Dolores," a cry for revolution, from Dolores, in the state of Guanajuato in Mexico.

That day, Hidalgo kick started a war between Spain and Mexico which eventually led to Mexico's independence in 1821. All across Mexico, Father Hidalgo is beloved as the "Father of Mexico" and Diez y seies de Septiembre is the Mexican equivalent of July the 4th. Even the President of Mexico participates by ringing that same bell - now over 200 years old - live on TV the night before the big celebration.

Viva la Independencia Nacional

National Hispanic Month

Every year from September 15 to October 15, Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by appreciating the community's history, heritage and contributions of the ancestors of American citizens who came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and South and Central America.

Hispanic Heritage Month originally started with one week of commemoration when it was first introduced by Congressman George E. Brown in June 1968. With the civil rights movement, the need to recognize the contributions of the Latin community gained traction in the 1960s.

September 15 is set as the starting date for the month as it is important for many reasons. It is the independence anniversary for Latin American countries El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. From here onwards, the independence days of Mexico and Chile fall on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Dia de la Raza or Columbus Day also falls within this month, on October 12.

Hispanic Americans have been integral to the prosperity of the U.S. Their contributions to the nation are immeasurable and they embody the best of American values. The Hispanic-American community has left an indelible mark on the U.S. culture and economy.

Yesterday was National Superhero Day.  Wildcats celebrated by tweeting, messaging or writing to their hero!  Make sure to always tell your hero that you're proud of how brave and strong he or she is!  As Iron Man once said, "Heroes are made with the path they choose, not with the powers they are graced with."  Thank your hero for choosing a path that includes you!

No Place for Hate

Wildcats, be careful with your words.  Once they are said, they can only be forgiven but never forgotten!  Let's end Hate speech!

Wildcats, April is Sexual assault Awareness month.  1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males will experience some form of sexual assault.  Perhaps the most important thing that victims need to understand, is that you are not alone.  We are here to support you.  Your Wildcat family has your back.

Wildcats, we must send a message that there is no shame in being a victim of sexual assault, the shame and disgrace is on the aggressor!  Victims are not what happens to them, but what they choose to become!

Wildcats don't let Wildcats blame victims.  It was not about what they were wearing, drinking or doing.  No one deserves to be sexually assaulted.  If you are aware of a situation of sexual assault, please tell someone who can help.  Feel free to use the tipline!

No Place for Hate

You may not know the name Satoshi Tajiri, but we're willing to bet you would recognize his most famous creation, Pokemon.  Satoshi has stated that he is on the high-functioning end of the Autism Spectrum.  He has confirmed on more than one occasion that he has Asperger's Syndrome, but as a general rule Tajiri chooses not to talk about his diagnosis in public.  Rather, he prefers that his many accomplishments speak for themselves.  Here is one of his quotes, "We do have a lot in common.  The same earth, the same air, the same sky.  Maybe if we started looking at what's the same, instead of looking at what's different, well, who knows?" - Meowth

No Place for Hate

April is Autism Awareness Month.  There is no one type of Autism but many.  Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today.

The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged.  Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.  There are numerous successful individuals with some form of Autism.

No Place for Hate

- We wanted to take this last week of Women's history month to highlight some Asian-American trailblazers.  Patsy Mink, a third generation Japanese-American, became the first Asian-American woman (and the first woman from an ethnic minority group) to be elected to the United States Congress in 1964.

In her four decades there, she worked to amplify the voices and rights of immigrants, women and aggressively championed Title IX, the legislation that brought academic and athletic equity to American educational institutions.

 - Chien-Shiung Wu who is known as the "First Lady of Physics" is a Chinese-born, American trained physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project which helped the United States develop the atomic bomb during World War II.  In 1975, she became the first female president of the American Physical Society.  Wu once remarked, "There is only one thing worse than coming home from the lab to a sink full of dirty dishes and that is not going to the lab at all."

- Amy Tan is both a beloved writer and trailblazer in the literary world.  Her bestselling 1989 novel The Joy Luck Club offered a portrait of Asian-American family life that was both specific to the community and universally felt.

- Tammy Duckworth, a U.S. senator currently representing the state of Illinois, has achieved an impressive number of firsts: She was the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first woman with a disability to be elected to Congress, the first female double amputee in the Senate.  She lost both legs while serving as a helicopter pilot in the Iraq War.  She is also the first member of Congress born in Thailand.

No Place for Hate

 - Little known black history fact about who has the most NBA championship rings.  That player is Bill Russel and he has won more rings than Kobe Bryant and Lebron James combined.  Bill Russel has earned 11 rings with the Boston Celtics. Two of his rings were earned as a player-coach.

- Mia Hamm is an American retired professional soccer player, two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion.  Hailed as a soccer icon, she played as a forward for the United States women's national soccer team from 1987 to 2004.  She currently ranks third in the history of the U.S. National team for international caps with 276 and first for career assists with 144.

- Rania Al-Abdullah is the queen consort of Jordan.  She is a progressive female voice in the Arab world, who is also a powerful advocate for reform in education and public health in Jordan.  She once said, "If you educate a woman, you educate a family.  If you educate a girl, you educate the future."

Theater

This month is theatre in our schools month.  During these unprecedented times, the arts have played an important role in supporting the social and educational wellbeing of students, whether through online learning or in person.  The arts, which include dance, theatre, music and visual arts promotes team building and self reflection that aids in creativity, critical thinking and communication.  This month make sure to support your arts programs.

Varsity Softball

Before Spring Break Varsity softball beat Cy Ranch 2 to 1.  This past weekend they played in a tournament in College Station going 5-1.  That puts their record at 18-3 on the season and 4-0 in district.  They will take on Cy Park today at Cy Park.  Let's go Softball!

FFA

Cypress Woods FFA completed their Houston Livestock Show season with a bang.  Wildcats place 2nd overall as a team in the Vet Science division and had one place 1st overall individual.

No Place for Hate

Since 1995, Presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as "Women's History Month".  These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

We will spend time during the announcements, highlighting some of the amazing accomplishments and contributions women have made all over the world.

 - The 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote, and was signed into law on August 26, 1920.  At the time, a number of other laws prohibited Native American women, Black women, Asian American women and Latin women from voting.  It wasn't until 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law, that discriminatory tactics such as literacy tests were outlawed and all women could vote. So exercise your right and vote!

 - The 2021 theme for Women's Month is "Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silenced."  The focus is on women's political involvement and leadership.  Women have played a major role in helping America honor what is written in the Constitution.

 - After winning the 2020 president election with Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris has made history as the first woman, first Black woman and first Asian American vice president in history.  That is 232 years after George Washington took the oath of office in 1789.

 - Today is International Women's Day and it is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.  The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.  This year's theme is Choose to Challenge!

Varsity Softball

Varsity softball won all three games on March 4 beating Magnolia West, Klein Cain and Cy Springs.

They won both games on Saturday beating Bridgeland 15-8 and Tomball Memorial 5-0.

That puts their record at 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in district.  They will next take on Langham Creek Tuesday at home.

Hockey

Congratulations to the Varsity Hockey team for their 4-1 victory over the Woodlands on Friday.

Good luck to the team tonight as they take on Tomball.  Get out there and hurt somebody!

Computer Science

On Saturday, March 6th, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) hosted a virtual Computer Science programming contest.

There were over 250 teams from across the planet.

The results are as follows for Woods:

No Place for Hate

Today little known black history fact is about Cullen Jones.  Cullen Jones is the first African American male swimmer to hold a world record in swimming.  At the 2008 United States Olympic Trials, Cullen set the record for the 50-meter freestyle and he didn't stop there.  He set the 50-meter freestyle American record in 2009 at the U.S. National Championships.

His record breaking career wasn't limited to solo efforts - Cullen was part of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams.  In 2008, he teamed up with the likes of Michael Phelps, Jason Lezak and Garret Weber-Gale and together they got the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay, which also came with the world record time.

No Place For Hate Fact

On October 31, 1950, 21-year-old Earl Lloyd became the first African American to play in an NBA game when he took the court in the season opener for the Washington Capitols, which are now the Sacramento Kings.  Lloyd grew up in Jim Crow Virginia and went to West Virginia State, where he was the star of the school's championship basketball team.

Dual Credit

Wildcats, if you wish to take a Dual Credit course next school year, registration is open now.  Taking Dual Credit courses is a great way to save time and money when thinking about your college plans.

If you are new to Dual Credit, you will need to apply to Lone Star College and receive a Lone Star ID Number.  You will need to check with your counselor to see if you have qualifying test scores.  The registration form is available online at the Cypress Woods College and Career site, or in the counseling office.  Forms are due no later than April 30.  See Mrs. England or Ms. Pickett in the counseling office if you need assistance.
